SOUTH KOREA: YOU MIGHT NOT NEED THAT PAID TRAVEL AUTHORISATION AFTER ALL!

Thursday, 15 October 2026 • WISH I KNEW THIS BEFORE

Q: Does everybody need K-ETA to visit South Korea in 2026?

A: No. South Korea temporarily exempts certain eligible passport holders from K-ETA through 31 December 2026. Many exempt travellers still need the separate, free e-Arrival Card.

ONE DESTINATION, DIFFERENT PASSPORT RULES

This is exactly why general travel tips can be misleading. Your friend might be exempt because of their nationality while you still need a visa or K-ETA. Living in the same country as somebody does not give you their passport’s privileges.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

K-ETA is a Korean electronic travel authorisation for eligible visa-free visitors when required, with a government application fee of ₩10,000. The e-Arrival Card is a separate arrival declaration. The official arrival card is free; it is not a replacement for a visa.

HOW TO CHECK AND APPLY

First check the official K-ETA site for your own nationality and passport type. If exempt, see whether you need the e-Arrival Card. The official online card is generally submitted within three days before arrival, using details about your passport, journey and accommodation.

WATCH OUT FOR FAKE PAYMENT SITES

Korean authorities warned in March 2026 about imitation e-Arrival Card websites requesting payment. If somebody asks for money for the government’s free arrival declaration, check the URL before sharing your information.

MY TAKEAWAY

Avoid paying for an authorisation you don’t need — and equally avoid turning up without a declaration you do need. Your passport and the official immigration information are what count.

AVAILABILITY, COST & LIMITATIONS

K-ETA exemption depends on passport and expires 31 Dec 2026 unless extended; ₩10,000 K-ETA where needed; official arrival card free.
